Squid game ending explained

Squid game ending explained

I introduced nine games in the previous post, but I didn't explain "Slap-match (ddakgi)" Including this game, there are 10 games, which is the number of
squid legs, 10. In fact, the reason why I didn't include "Slap-match" was that I thought all nine games were based on "Slap-match". Therefore, I would like to explain why this game was so important.

(1) Green light, red light = Fake gun

First, let's think about the game of slap-match. A suspicious but handsome man suggests Ki-hoon to play a game, but Ki-hoon keeps doubting him. However, as the man wearing the suit continues to talk to him, Ki-hoon takes a fake gun out of his pocket. Ki-hoon stares at him and the man threatened by the gun raises his hand. The first game, “Green light, red light”, was a game in which a doll with its head turned its head sensed the participants’ movement and fired guns at the person if it moved even a little. Unfortunately, people didn't think this elimination was death. It's like, you can't think that the first gun you see would be a fake gun. From that moment on, Ki-hoon and a gentleman have already started playing games. The important thing is that nobody would have guessed that people who participated in the Squid Game could die except one person. As if he had no idea that the game, which started lightly with a fake gun, would lead to a slap match and get slapped angrily.

(2) Pick a paper “ddakgi” = Pick sugar.

The gentleman asks, "What color would you like?" This line is similar to "Choose from yourself"- Ilnam. The most important part of slap-match is which “ddakgi” you will choose. Anyone who has played this game will agree. The aspect of the game changes completely depending on what kind of paper was made and who will attack first. If “Ki-Hoon can attack first with a slightly thick paper “ddakgi”, had chosen a star or triangle shape rather than umbrella one in “Sugar honey comb”, he would have pass the game more easily. Therefore, the direction of our lives or games will depend on what we choose. "Ki-hoon" may not have used his tongue if he knew from “Sugar honey comb” that he had to choose well to pass. If you listen to the sound when the gentleman and "Ki-hoon" play slap-match, you can see there is one different thing. When "Ki-hoon" attacks, you can hear light and thin sound. But when a gentleman attacks, a dull sound is heard. I think the red "ddakgi" is made of thicker paper.

Lies = tricks in marbled

Gentleman said that the winner will have 100 dollars before the game begins. However, when the gentleman wins, he slaps Ki Hoon’s face.

"You don’t have to pay 100 dollars if I can slap your face". - Gentleman.

This line has many meanings. First, this is a lie.

"Everyone is equal in this game" - Frontman

The frontman said everyone is "equal" in the game, but there are so many lies in the Squid Game. Participant 111 got hints about the next games in payment for surgery. And No. 1 "ilnam" is the organizer of this game. Even if he didn't know what game he would play, it is true that he was more advantageous than other participants as he is the organizer of the game. These lies are expressed as a trick in the game, such as a frontman's mistake or a gentleman's lie. Sadly, however, Ki-hoon has no power to change these lies and tricks. There is only a way to adapt to the rules.

Second is 'justification of violence'. We think violence cannot be justified for any reason, but in society, violence is sometimes converted into money. In other words, it makes it possible to agree on someone's violence with money. If someone gets hurt by violence, society accepts it is okay to compensate with money as much as I got hurt. I know I shouldn't, but sometimes I accept it without noticing that. Since ‘Ki-hoon’ accepted gentleman to slap his face, he also accepted that violence is solved by money.

(3) Attack and defense = tug-of-war.

The tug-of-war game’s objective is ‘we will win if we can pull participants’, but in fact, it has pushing and pulling and we have to use both of them. Ilnam was well aware of this point. In other words, tug-of-war is not only a pulling "attack" but also a pushing "defense."

"When I give you a signal, you guys have to take 3 steps forward". - Sangwoo.

The slap-match also seems to be only attacking, but if the back is exposed without considering defense, you will be in a very disadvantageous situation. However, Ki Hoon lost a lot against a gentleman because he only focused on offense. If he knew that the strategy was not only to pull but also push to the enemy's side when playing a tug-of-war game, Ki-hoon would have said the line of Sang-woo earlier. In the end, slap-match is a game that breaks rhythms by changing offense and defense by pushing and pulling, just like tug-of-war.

"If you can hold out for that long, you will be able to catch a moment in your opponents’ hold, and their rhythm breaks." -ilnam.

(4) Winning or losing = marbled.

photo - Netflix

The scary thing about slap-match is that there must be a winner and loser. In other words, it is a game without a draw rule. This rule is also reflected in the 'Marbled' game. Originally, "Marbled" was not necessarily a game to win, but in "Squid Game", the condition that the opponent's marble must be obtained to win was added, so this game also became a game that must have a winner or loser. In that respect, the two games are similar. However, there are also different parts. In a cruel game that someone must lose, Ji-young deliberately loses so that ‘Saebyeok’ can win, and Il-nam understands Ki-hoon's lie and just gives the remaining one marble to him. The reason is the meaning of 'kkanbu', episode 6th title.

"When I was little, I used to play marbles a lot". - Ilnam.

In fact, when I was little, when I played marbles, I wanted to play more with my friends, but sometimes I got all my friends' marbles. In that case, I give my bead to my friend without any payments. This is because the purpose of the game was not winning or losing. The purpose of the game is to just enjoy this time.

While the "Squid Game" was going according to the frontman's plan, variables occurred from this point. Comparing it with some of the slap-match games makes it clear. The gentleman tried to win by looking down on Ki-hoon, and Ki-hoon also played a game to beat the gentleman. On the other hand, in "Marbled,” there are people who fully use the time and sympathize with each other even if one person dies. It was a match between "Seabyeok" and "Jiyoung." The two did not play the game properly, but they talked about each other's past and understood their situations. In that respect, it was a game that showed the participants surpassing the directors of the "Squid Game."

(5) Slapping cheeks = glass stepping stone.

photo - Netflix

As the slap-match begins, Ki-hoon continues to be slapped. As it continues, blood bruises appear on his face. The stepping stone is similar to this. The main point of the stepping stone game is that several challenges are needed and sacrifices are needed. Our lives also need several challenges. Unfortunately, however, society these days seems to lead to failure in one attempt, like a stepping stone. The reason why slap-match is similar is that the redder Ki-hoon's cheeks, the more he adapts to this game little by little and wins at the end. As if crossing the stepping stone one by one, more sacrifices, but they could win by arriving at the destination. Therefore, the repeated slap-match felt like crossing the stepping stone one by one, and Ki-hoon's red cheek felt the blood of the participants who were sacrificed with the stepping stone. Anyway, "Ki hoon" kept trying and won in the last.

(6) Winning prize money = Squid game.

photo - Netflix

The squid game is a game in which attackers and defenders play their roles and one side must win. Ki Hoon becomes an attacker and Sang Hoon becomes a defender, which is similar to a slap match. As explained in the tug-of-war earlier, "Ki-hoon" plays the slap-match very aggressively and the gentleman defends and aims for a shot. This seems to be the gentleman as a defender and 'Ki-hoon' as an attacker. Gentleman clearly make ‘Ki hoon’ recognizes the rule that if either attacker or defender loses, one will get the prize money at the end of the slap match. However, in the squid game, Ki-hoon suggests a draw with Sang-woo. This was an unpredictable variable. This is because there is no draw in the squid game. Only one side must survive at the end of the squid game, and one person must win at the end of the slap match. However, Ki Hoon tried to play a game where both offense and defense win. Perhaps the biggest meaning of the "Squid Game" series starts to create variables by playing games in different ways from participants and ending with game hosts designed, represented by "slap-match."

After several attempts, Ki-hoon could get 100 dollars in his hand which eventually led to "Ki-hoon" who got the winning prize. However, when he was slapped and won, it was only 100 dollars. I can't forget the face of Ki Hoon, who holds cash and makes me impressed. Ki-hoon, who lost his friends and teammates but received a lot of prize money, won the game and returned home, but his mother died and all he had left behind was prize money. Ki Hun's face when he finished "slap-math" and after the "Squid Game" looks similar. He won, but his depressed face was impressive too.

(7) Again, a new game.

The gentleman's proposal did not end here. He continues to say things that make Ki-hoon realize reality, who earned money from "Slap match."

"Did you write a waiver today?" -Gentleman

He won a slap match, but nothing has changed in reality. Even though he won the "Squid Game," his life has not changed. This is because the world is still full of distrust and game hosts continue to make people play games. The gentleman suggests “Squid game” to Ki-hoon with numbers. And Ki-hoon, who finished the Squid Game, is about to go abroad, and there is another Squid game to encounter him again.
